Air Fryer Oil – The Complete Guide

Usually, everyone that buys an air fryer expects to omit oil inclusion in their diet. Air fryer replaces many smart cooking appliances by serving a variety of purposes. Some recipes and some processes of cooking require oil, but fortunately, it can be an excellent addition rather than a harmful oil.

Every healthy oil is not suitable for air fryers. We need to put in some effort to understand the need for a particular oil for your family and the food. The smoking point of oil plays an inevitable role in giving risk-free food. In that way, air fryer oil has to choose in the finest matched way to yield tasty and harmless fried or baked food.

The Smoking Point of Oils:

Smoking point/burning point of oils are different from each other—oils with more fat heat up faster than the refined oils. Free fatty acids and impurities are the reasons for the smoke point.

Oils Between 400 Degrees F to 450 Degrees F:

Canola Oil:

The smoke point of canola oil is 400-degrees F. Canola oil is extracted from rapeseed, which is healthy and low in erucic acid. It has less saturated fat and has a considerable amount of monosaturated fat that is good for the heart.

The medium to the high smoke point of canola oil is useful for deep frying and is suitable to cook with air fryers. If you have an average temperature air fryer, then you can use the much natural canola oil in your art of cooking.

Peanut oil:

The smoke point of peanut oil is about 437-degrees F. It is high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Peanut oil gives a neutral taste after frying in high temperatures and can be used for reusing.

Peanut allergens are found high in the cold-pressed peanut oil and are not that good for health to cook in high temperatures. If you are willing to use, then you can choose refined Peanut/groundnut oil for cooking with your air fryer.

Rice Bran oil:

The smoke point of rice bran oil is 450-degrees F. Due to its high burning point, it can be used in air fryers that work above 400-degree F. Rice bran oil has a similar nutritional composition as groundnut oil.

Almond oil:

The smoke point of almond oil is 430 degrees F. The monounsaturated fat of almond oil is 32%,  where polyunsaturated fat is 13%, and saturated fat is 10%, which serves as an average oil for air fryers.Most of the people don’t use almond oil for air fryers since many home cooks do not widely use it.

Sesame oil:

The smoke point of sesame oil is 450 degrees F. Due to its nutty flavor, some people use it for dressing the food, or some also use it for stir-frying and deep-frying.

Refined sesame oil is best suited to be used in air fryers due to its high burning point. Sesame oil is high in polyunsaturated fat of 41%, for which some users may not like to use it for cooking in high temperatures.

Oils Between 450 degrees F to 500 degrees F:

Sunflower oil: Sunflower Oil:

The smoke point of sunflower oil is above 480 degrees F, which is a commonly used oil for deep frying since it has a high smoke point. Sunflower oil is significant in the composition of monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat.

Sunflower oil is high in vitamin-E, which is good for skin and is much suited for cooking in the air fryer. It is one of the most natural oils and used widely for cooking with air fryers.

Palm oil:

The smoke point of palm oil is 450 degrees F. Palm oil is high in saturated fat and is a good source of vitamin E. It is one of the cheapest cooking oils.

Palm oil is unfortunately not preferred by many of the air fryer users for frying any food, but due to its high smoke point, it is recommended if you want to make pastries using an air fryer.

Soybean oil:

The smoke point of soybean oil is 453 degrees F. Soybean oil is the most commonly used vegetable oil. It is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Soybean oil is suitable for frying and baking using air fryers. It is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Corn oil:

The smoke point of corn oil is 460 degrees F. It is one of the less expensive vegetable oils.

Refined corn oil is perfect for frying in high temperatures due to its high smoke point. You can use corn oil for brushing the food to cook in the air fryer.

Mustard oil:

The smoke point of mustard oil is 480 degrees F and has a very high pungent smell, which may not suit every cuisine and users. Mustard oil is high in erucic and alpha-linolenic acid.

Mustard oil with high erucic acid is prohibited from being sold and used in the US to avoid any adverse effects.

Clarified Butter:

The smoke point of clarified butter is 482 degrees F. Clarifying butter to get ghee is termed as clarified butter, which is less in water and fat density.

Clarified butter has a very less amount of lactose content, and thus it is suitable for milk allergy people. You can use it for all kinds of pastry food when you are working with air fryers.

Extra light olive oil:

The smoke point of extra light olive oil is 463 degrees F. If you are a Mediterranean cuisine lover, then you can use extra light olive oil to the food that you are going to cook in an air fryer.

The flavors in extra light olive oil may not be favorable for some cooking. The total unsaturated fat of extra light olive oil is higher than 85%, which is also a factor for high-temperature cooking.

Oils above 500 degrees F:

Avocado oil:

The smoke point of avocado oil is 520 degrees F. As in extra light olive oil, avocado oil is also high in monounsaturated fats, which adds up the smoking point temperature.

Since the smoking point of refined and unrefined avocado oil differs only marginally, they can be used for cooking in high temperatures.

Refined Safflower oil:

The smoke point of safflower oil is 510 degrees F. The neutral taste of the oil helps in frying in the air fryer. Monounsaturated fat plays a significant part while using safflower oil for cooking.

Safflower oil holds up for repeated uses due to its high smoke point. Since air fryers require very little for cooking, safflower oil is one of the best-suited oils for frying in higher temperatures.

Healthy Air Fryer Oils:

All the high burning point oil are suitable for air fryers. But you need to note which food you cook at what temperature with which oil. Some food that cooks in low temperatures should be complemented by only the oil with less smoke point for amazing flavors.

Certain flavorful oils, when cooked at high temperatures, may damage the taste of the entire food that is cooked. In the same way, the oil that has to be appropriately heated for good taste cannot be used for moderate and less cooking temperatures. Oils that are greater in the proportion of monounsaturated fats offer the best health benefits than other oils.

Need for Oil in an Air Fryer:

If the food that is to be cooked in an air fryer already has oil or fat content in it, then we need not mist or grease the cooking basket. If the food is with a lot of water and starch content, then the food and the basket should be oiled or brushed.

Some processed food that is ready to heat and consume may have a lot of fat content; then, it requires no oil for cooking in the air fryer. The need for oil differs from food to food and also from person to person.

Right Quantity Oil for Frying:

While using oil for cooking in the air fryer, you need to choose your favorite right choice of oil. Using oil in an air fryer is naturally a less expensive deal since air fryer does not require oil for cooking.

But if you are a health-conscious person, then you can even monitor the amount of oil required to make healthy fries and desserts. In case, if you choose a flavorful oil, then you can use a meager amount for required taste. Some users may prefer to use extra light olive oil to prepare fried food with less misting of oil.

Best Suggested Oils for Air Fryers:

  • Refined safflower oil and sunflower oil are two best oils for air fryer users due to its high smoke point. If you want a flavorless oil, then safflower and sunflower oil are the recommended oils.  
  • Many air fryer users widely use refined canola oil; if you don’t want to try any new oil, then refined canola oil is a harmless oil for air fryers with average temperatures.
  • If you like to add flavor to your food to enhance the taste, then you can go for sesame oil, extra light olive oil, or clarified butter for high-temperature cooking.


The exact smoking point of the oil depends on the quality of refinement. Oils with high monounsaturated fat are suitable for frying the food in high temperatures. If the oil that is potentially high in polyunsaturated fat, then it must be considered for only raw cooking or brushing of food to cook in fewer temperatures.

Sometime pan-frying may not produce crispy food though it may require a large quantity of oil. Air fryer helps in crisping the food on the outside with negligible amount oil with maximum nutrients intact. Air frying with the perfect oil will satisfy your taste buds as well as your body.
